This is a silver charm coin of uncertain date. Based on its craftsmanship and state of preservation, it likely dates to the late Qing dynasty or the early Republican period.
At the upper edge of the charm coin is a perforation, indicating that it was likely modified for use as a personal ornament or pendant. Both sides of the coin are bordered with a geometric pattern resembling petals or radiating sunrays. At the centre of the obverse, the Chinese characters “天赦” (Tianshe) are flanked by decorative floral motifs. Tianshe, meaning “Heaven’s Pardon”, refers to a traditional Han Chinese ritual practise in which supplicants pray to the Jade Emperor, the celestial sovereign, for forgiveness of human transgressions. In traditional religious observance, this rite was part of a more comprehensive ritual framework, which also included “Dishe” (Earth’s Pardon) and “Tiandi Duhua” (Universal Salvation by Heaven and Earth) ceremonies.
The reverse of the charm coin is likewise adorned with floral motifs. Arranged in the sequence — top, bottom, right, and left — are the four Chinese characters “歲歲平安” (Year after Year of Peace and Safety). This inscription, combined with the ritual significance of the obverse, strongly suggests that the coin’s production was closely associated with religious or ceremonial purposes, likely intended as a protective talisman or auspicious charm within traditional folk belief systems.
