This is a 50-schilling silver coin issued in AD 1973 by Austria to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the completion of the renowned landmark, the Bummerlhaus, in Steyr.
The building depicted on the obverse of the coin is the Bummerlhaus, a quintessential example of late Gothic architecture and one of the best-preserved medieval structures in Austria. Documentary records of the Bummerlhaus date back as early as AD 1450, while the oldest parts of the building are believed to originate from around the 13th century. In the 19th century, the Bummerlhaus operated as an inn, whose signboard featured a golden lion. Locals humorously remarked that the lion resembled a “little fat dog” (Bummerl), which ultimately gave rise to the name “Bummerlhaus.” Along the lower edge of the coin’s obverse is the signature of Austrian engraver Fritz Tiefenthaler, inscribed as “TIEFENTHALER.”
At the upper edge of the coin’s obverse, the year of issue, “1973,” is inscribed. Flanking the date are two shields: the one on the left representing the state of Upper Austria, and the one on the right symbolising the city of Steyr. Encircling the design is the inscription “500 JAHRE BUMMERLHAUS IN STEYR,” which translates to “500 Years of the Bummerlhaus in Steyr.”
The reverse of the coin features ten shields arranged in a circular pattern, representing the national coat of arms along with those of the nine federal states of Austria. At the centre of the design is the coin’s denomination, “50 SCHILLING.” Surrounding this composition is the inscription “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH,” meaning “Republic of Austria.” Additionally, the edge of the coin bears a circumferential inscription indicating the denomination as “FUENFZIG SCHILLING” (50 Schilling).
