This is a silver coin with a denomination of one sol, issued and minted in AD 1915 by the Republic of Peru, located in South America.
The obverse of the coin features the national coat of arms of Peru. At the top of the shield is a decorative holly and oak wreath. Within the shield, the upper left quadrant depicts a vicuña, an animal native to the Andes Mountains and symbolic of the nation’s fauna. The upper right quadrant contains a cinchona tree, a plant indigenous to the Andes and historically significant for its role in producing quinine. The lower section of the shield displays a cornucopia, representing prosperity and abundance.
The coat of arms is flanked by intertwined olive and laurel branches on either side, symbolising peace and victory. Along the lower edge of the coin is inscribed the year of issue, “1915,” while the surrounding legend bears the country name “REPUBLICA PERUANA” (Republic of Peru), the mint location “LIMA,” the silver fineness “9 DECIMOS FINO” (.900 fine silver), and the assayer’s initials “F. G.”
The reverse of the coin depicts a seated Liberty figure, draped in robes and facing to the right. In her left hand, she holds a staff topped with a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of liberty. Resting against her right side is a shield emblazoned with the “Sun of May”, an emblem widely featured in the national heraldry of several South American nations. To the right of the figure stands a Roman-style column, upon which rests a laurel wreath. A ribbon inscribed with the word “LIBERTAD” (Liberty) winds around the column. Along the lower edge of the coin, the denomination “UN SOL” (One Sol) is struck in Spanish, while the surrounding legend reads “FIRME Y FELIZ POR LA UNION,” meaning “Firm and Happy for the Union,” a patriotic motto commonly featured on Peruvian coinage.
