In AD 1937, with the full outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, Japan’s demand for nickel — essential for its national defence industries — increased significantly. In response, the Japanese government enacted the Temporary Currency Act in AD 1938, changing the composition of the 10-sen coin from nickel to aluminium-bronze. These coins were issued between Shōwa 13 and 15 (AD 1938–1940) and circulated both within Japan and across its overseas colonies, including Korea, Taiwan, and South Sakhalin.
The coin is of a round-holed type. On the obverse, waves set against a rising sun motif serve as the background decoration. At the upper centre appears the chrysanthemum emblem, symbolising the Japanese imperial family, while the denomination “10 Sen” is inscribed on either side just below the chrysanthemum.
The reverse features multiple concentric circles as the background design. At the centre is a double-layered cherry blossom (sakura) motif, flanked on either side by paulownia leaf emblems. The upper margin bears the inscription of the issuing country’s name, “Dai Nippon” (大日本), in Kanji characters, while the lower margin is inscribed with the year of issue, “Shōwa 13” (昭和十三年).
