This is a privately issued token of uncertain exact date, but it can be broadly attributed to the transitional period between the late Qing dynasty and the early Republic of China. It is made of copper and was issued by a private money exchange or banking establishment.
The token adopts a Western-style coin design but retains the traditional Chinese square-hole motif at its centre. On the obverse, surrounding the square, the inscription “大洋伍分” (Dayang Wufen, meaning “Five Cents of the Dollar”) is engraved in Chinese characters, arranged in a clockwise sequence—top, bottom, right, and left—indicating that the token’s face value was equivalent to five cents of a silver dollar. The reverse side is in considerably poorer condition, with most details worn beyond recognition, though faint traces of text remain visible at the centre.
