This is a silver dirham minted in AH 652 (AD 1254) by the Ayyubid emir al-Nāṣir Yūsuf, who ruled from Aleppo as his seat of power.

Due to its age, the surface of this coin exhibits some degree of wear, though its features remain discernible. Both the obverse and reverse are adorned with hexagrams composed of double-lined borders enclosing a beaded pattern. The use of the six-pointed star in this manner is a distinctive hallmark of Ayyubid coinage design.

Within the central hexagram on the obverse of the coin are four lines of inscription arranged vertically. From top to bottom, they read: “الامام” (al-Imām, “The Imam”), “الناصر أحمد” (al-Nāṣir Aḥmad, “al-Nasir Ahmad”), “الملك العادل” (al-Malik al-ʿĀdil, “The Just King”), and “ابو بكر” (Abū Bakr, “Abu Bakr”). Surrounding the hexagram, beginning from the one o’clock position and proceeding counterclockwise, is the Islamic declaration of faith (shahāda): “لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله”, meaning “There is no deity but God; Muhammad is the Messenger of God.”

The central hexagram on the reverse of the coin contains four lines of inscription identifying the ruler’s titles and lineage. From top to bottom, the inscriptions read: “الملك” (al-Malik, “The King”), “الظاهر غازي” (al-Ẓāhir Ghāzī, “al-Zahir Ghazi”), “ابن يوسف بن” (ibn Yūsuf ibn, “son of Yusuf, son of”), and “أيوب” (Ayyūb, “Ayyub”). Encircling the hexagram, beginning from the one o’clock position and proceeding counterclockwise, is the inscription indicating the minting location and Hijri date: “Struck in Aleppo, year AH 652.”

The Ayyubid dynasty was founded in AD 1174 by one of the most prominent figures in Islamic history, Saladin, a Kurdish leader of exceptional renown. al-Nāṣir Yūsuf was Saladin’s great-grandson. In AD 1236, at the age of just seven, al-Nāṣir assumed the title of emir of Aleppo. Throughout his reign, he remained in a protracted state of conflict with the rising Mamluk Sultanate based in Egypt.

In AD 1260, faced with the advancing Mongol forces led by Hulagu Khan, who captured Aleppo, al-Nāṣir fled southward with his family to the region of Gaza. During his flight, he was betrayed by his own followers, who handed him over to Hulagu. He was ultimately executed under Mongol custody.
