This is a silver coin with a denomination of 5 dirhams, issued in AH 1311 (AD 1913) by Morocco, which at the time was a French protectorate located in North Africa.
The obverse of the coin features a six-pointed star, within which is a circular field inscribed with Arabic script indicating the issuing authority and denomination: “نصف ريال يوسفي شريف”, meaning “Half riyal issued by Yousuf Sharif.” Yousuf Sharif refers to the then-ruling monarch of Morocco, who ascended the throne in AD 1912. Encircling the star from the one o’clock position counter-clockwise is a benedictory inscription in Arabic: “محفوف بالسعادة و اليمن و الإقبال والعز المبين,” which translates as “Surrounded by happiness, good fortune, prosperity, and manifest glory.”
The reverse of the coin features a double solid circle at the centre, within which is inscribed the Hijri date and minting location: “1311 اختير ضربه بباريز عام,” meaning “Struck in Paris in the year AH 1311.” On either side of the central motif are multiple diamond-shaped emblems symbolising the Moroccan royal authority. The upper edge bears the inscription “فيه خمسة دراهم فخرية,” which translates as “Contains five honorary dirhams,” indicating a ceremonial or symbolic denomination. The lower edge features the authoritative phrase “لضبط الحقوق المرعية,” meaning “To uphold the established and recognised rights.”
Since AD 1631, the Alaouite dynasty—claiming descent from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib—established its rule over the region of Morocco. By the early 20th century, Morocco had come under increasing pressure from European powers, particularly France and Spain. On March 30, AD 1912, the Treaty of Fes was signed, placing Morocco under French protection, while its northern and southern territories were ceded to Spanish control. It was not until AD 1956 that Morocco regained its independence and emerged once again as a sovereign nation, free from French and Spanish colonial rule.
