This is a copper coin minted in Tibet and dated to the 53rd year of the 15th Rabjung cycle in the Tibetan calendar (corresponding to AD 1919). The coin bears the inscription “Skar Phyer Brgyal”, which can be literally translated as a denomination of “7½ Skar”. The production period of the Skar Phyer Brgyal copper coins spans from approximately AD 1918 to 1922, with a small number also struck in AD 1926.
The coin features an eight-petal floral design. At the centre of the obverse side is a beaded circle enclosing a left-facing lion. This snow lion is a significant totem in Tibetan culture; originally, in Tibetan mythology, it was considered a fierce spirit associated with the spread of epidemics. Over time, however, it came to symbolise authority and protection in Tibetan society.
Encircling the outer edge of the coin is the Tibetan inscription: “དགའ་ལྡན་ཕོ་བྲང་ ཕྱོ་ ལས་རྣམ་ རྣམ་རྒྱལ།”, which was commonly inscribed on Tibetan coins during the reign of the 13th Dalai Lama. It translates to: “Ganden Palace, the One Who Subjugates in All Directions.”“Ganden Phodrang” was the residence of successive Dalai Lamas at Drepung Monastery in Lhasa before their assumption of full temporal power, and it served as the symbolic seat of their authority.
The reverse side of the coin also features a beaded circle, within which appears the image of a Dharmachakra (Wheel of Dharma). At the centre of the wheel are three fish, whose curved bodies form a triangular configuration. Depending on the direction in which their tails are oriented, two distinct varieties exist: one with a clockwise and another with a counterclockwise alignment. This specimen belongs to the clockwise variety.
Encircling the image is the Tibetan inscription: “རབ་བྱུང་ ༡༥་ ལོ་ ༥༣་ སྐར་ཕྱེད་བརྒྱད་”, which denotes the coin’s date of issue as the 53rd year of the 15th Rabjung cycle in the Tibetan calendar, and its denomination as 7½ Skar.
