This is a sestertius brass coin issued during the reign of Roman Emperor Hadrian, dated to AD 117–138. Due to the passage of time, the surface of the coin has become heavily worn, rendering many of its details no longer discernible.
The obverse of the coin features a right-facing portrait of Hadrian, wearing a laurel wreath. Flanking the portrait on both sides is the Latin inscription “IMP CAESAR TRAIANVS HADRIANVS AVG”, which translates to “Emperor Caesar Trajan Hadrian Augustus.” However, due to the coin’s age, most of the inscription has been worn away and is no longer fully legible.
The reverse of the coin depicts Roma, the personified goddess of the Roman state, wearing a helmet and seated atop a cuirass. In her right hand, she holds a figure of Victory, while her left arm rests on a shield and grasps a cornucopia, symbolising abundance. Surrounding the image is the imperial titulature “PONT MAX TR POT COS III”, signifying Pontifex Maximus (Chief Priest), Tribunicia Potestas (holder of tribunician power), and Consul for the third time. At the bottom of the reverse appears the inscription “SC” (Senatus Consulto), indicating that the coin was struck by decree of the Senate, and thus minted in a region of Italy under senatorial authority.
Hadrian was the third of the Five Good Emperors of the Roman Empire. His most renowned achievement was the construction of Hadrian’s Wall, which established the northern boundary of Roman Britain. In addition to his military and administrative policies, Hadrian travelled extensively across the empire’s provinces and sought to make Athens the centre of his efforts to promote Greek culture.
