This is a 2-cent coin issued in February, Republic of China Year 29 (AD 1940). In accordance with revised regulations, the Central Mint replaced the original copper composition with brass, and began minting this denomination using the new alloy.
The design of the coin follows the stylistic conventions introduced during the implementation of the Fabi Policy in Republic of China Year 24 (AD 1935). The obverse features a depiction of a spade money—a form of currency circulated during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods—which was later adopted by the Nationalist Government as the emblem of the Ministry of Finance. Inside the spade is a stylised character “財” (wealth) rendered in imitation of oracle bone script. Flanking the spade on both sides are Chinese characters denoting the denomination “二分” (2 cent). The outer rim is encircled by a decorative key-pattern border.
The reverse of the coin is likewise adorned with a key-pattern border. At the centre is the national emblem of the Republic of China. Along the upper arc, a circular inscription indicates the year of issue: “中華民國二十九年” (Republic of China Year 29).
