This coin was issued during the reign of Lê Nghi Dân, the fourth emperor of the Later Lê dynasty and the first to be deposed from the throne. It was cast in bronze during his brief eight-month reign and bears the inscription Thiên Hưng Thông Bảo (天興通寶), corresponding to his era name.
The coin follows the traditional Chinese-influenced design of a square-holed cash coin. On the obverse, the four characters Thiên Hưng Thông Bảo (天興通寶) are inscribed in standard script, arranged in the order of top, bottom, right, and left. The reverse side is blank, bearing no inscriptions or decorative elements.
As the eldest son of Emperor Lê Thái Tông, Lê Nghi Dân was designated Crown Prince at birth. However, due to the arrogance of his mother, Lady Dương Thị Bí, she was demoted to commoner status by the emperor, and Nghi Dân was consequently stripped of his title and demoted to Prince of Lạng Sơn. Both mother and son were exiled to the border region of Lạng Sơn near the Sino-Vietnamese frontier.
Upon reaching adulthood, Lê Nghi Dân remained deeply resentful over being denied the throne. In AD 1459, he staged a coup, assassinating his half-brother Emperor Lê Nhân Tông and the latter’s mother, Lady Nguyễn Thị Anh, and proclaimed himself emperor. However, Nghi Dân’s tyrannical rule quickly alienated the court. In the following year, a group of ministers led by Nguyễn Xí launched a countercoup, executed Nghi Dân, posthumously demoting him to the title of Marquess Lệ Đức (Lệ Đức hầu), and enthroned Lê Tư Thành, the fourth son of Lê Thái Tông, as the new emperor.
