This is a Vietnamese coin of unknown date of issue. Due to the country’s frequent historical periods of political fragmentation, and even during times of dynastic unification, regional warlords and local elites often engaged in the independent minting of currency. Within this socio-political context, numerous coins emerged that cannot be correlated with any officially recognised reign title. Such coins are referred to in numismatic scholarship as “uncatalogued coins” (脫譜錢), denoting currency that falls outside the established historical and administrative records.
The coin follows the traditional Chinese-influenced square-holed cash coin design and is made of bronze. The obverse of the coin follows a clockwise sequence, with the four Chinese characters “Đại Bình Nguyên Bảo” (大平元寶) inscribed in a somewhat cursive style of regular script. The reverse is plain, with no inscriptions or decorative motifs.
This coin was likely cast during the reign of Đinh Bộ Lĩnh, the founding ruler of the Đinh dynasty (AD 970–980), and appears to have been privately issued by civilians imitating the official reign title “Thái Bình” (太平). The Đinh dynasty was the first in Vietnamese history to mint its own coinage. According to historical records, the official coin issued under Đinh Bộ Lĩnh bore the inscription “Đại Bình Hưng Bảo” (大平興寶).
