This is a bronze coin issued during the reign of Lê Hiến Tông, the sixth ruler of Vietnam’s Later Lê dynasty. It was cast under his reign title “Cảnh Thống” and bears the inscription “Cảnh Thống Thông Bảo” (景統通寶).
The coin follows the traditional Chinese style of square-holed cash coins. On the obverse, the inscription “景統通寶” (Cảnh Thống Thông Bảo) is engraved in regular script Chinese characters, arranged in a clockwise sequence: top, bottom, right, and left. The reverse is blank, bearing no inscriptions or decorative elements.
Lê Hiến Tông was favoured by his father, Emperor Lê Thánh Tông, from a young age due to his intelligence and wisdom. He ascended the throne in AD 1497. During his reign, Lê Hiến Tông largely maintained a policy of non-interference, relying on the stable foundations laid by his father. This approach contributed to a period of economic prosperity and social stability. As a result, the Cảnh Thống Thông Bảo coins were minted in considerable quantities and exhibit a wide variety of typological variations.
