This is a “Thành Thái Thông Bảo” coin cast in bronze during the reign of Emperor Thành Thái, the 10th ruler of the Nguyễn dynasty, who reigned from AD 1889 to 1907. By this time, the Nguyễn emperors in Huế had largely lost real political power and functioned primarily as figureheads under French colonial rule. Nonetheless, to preserve the symbolic dignity of the monarchy, the traditional square-holed cash coins continued to be minted under the imperial era name.
The coin follows the traditional Chinese-influenced square-holed cash coin design. On the obverse, the four Chinese characters “Thành Thái Thông Bảo” (成泰通寶) are engraved in regular script, arranged in the sequence of top, bottom, right, and left.
On the reverse side of the coin, the denomination “Ten Cash” is inscribed on both the left and right sides. In addition to this version, another variant bearing the denomination “Six Cash” also exists.
Emperor Thành Thái was imprisoned at a young age due to palace intrigues and was not released until the age of ten, when he was rescued by the French and installed as a puppet emperor. During his reign, he actively absorbed and introduced elements of French culture. However, he also harboured a deep sense of sorrow over the country’s subjugation under French control.
In AD 1907, Emperor Thành Thái was deposed by the French colonial authorities for appointing officials without their approval. He was replaced by his son, Emperor Duy Tân, while Thành Thái was placed under house arrest in Cochinchina. In AD 1916, following Emperor Duy Tân’s participation in an anti-French uprising, both father and son were exiled to Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean. In AD 1947, with the assistance of his son-in-law, who was a practising lawyer, Thành Thái was finally permitted to return to his homeland. He passed away in AD 1954 at the age of 75.
