This is a 15 Möngö coin issued in AD 1959 by Mongolian People’s Republic. The coin is composed of aluminium. Möngö was a low-denomination coin formerly used in Mongolia, with an exchange rate of 100 möngö to 1 tögrög.
The obverse side of the coin features the national emblem of the Mongolian People’s Republic, specifically the forth version used between AD 1941 and 1960, prior to the country’s transition to democracy. Reflecting Mongolia’s status during the Cold War as a member of the communist bloc and a Soviet satellite state, the emblem was heavily influenced by Soviet design.
The national emblem is encircled by sheaves of wheat and a cogwheel, symbolising the unity of farmers and workers. At the top is a red star, representing communism, while the ribbon at the bottom bears the Cyrillic abbreviation of the country’s name: “БНМАУ” (Mongolian People’s Republic).
At the centre of the emblem is an image of a Mongolian man in traditional attire riding a horse across the steppe toward a rising sun, symbolising the nation’s march toward a bright communist future.
Flanking the central figure are images of Mongolia’s most important livestock—cattle, goats, sheep, and camels—which, together with the horse in the centre, represent the traditional “five livestock” (таван хошуу мал). These animals hold deep cultural significance in Mongolian nomadic society.
Beneath the national emblem appears the abbreviated form of the country’s name in Cyrillic Mongolian: “Бүгд Найрамдах Монгол Ард Улс” (Mongolian People’s Republic), along with the year of issue: “1959.”
The lower edge of the coin’s reverse is decorated with a wreath motif, while the upper edge displays the denomination “15 МӨНГӨ” (15 Möngö) in Cyrillic script.
