This is a 5 Möngö coin issued in AD 1945 by Mongolian People’s Republic. The coin is composed of aluminium bronze. Möngö was a low-denomination coin formerly used in Mongolia, with an exchange rate of 100 möngö to 1 tögrög.
The edge of the coin is encircled by a serrated rim. The obverse side of the coin features the national emblem of the Mongolian People’s Republic, specifically the third version used between AD 1940 and 1941, prior to the country’s transition to democracy. Reflecting Mongolia’s status during the Cold War as a member of the communist bloc and a Soviet satellite state, the emblem was heavily influenced by Soviet design.
The national emblem is encircled by sheaves of wheat and a cogwheel, symbolising the unity of farmers and workers. At the top is a red star, representing communism, while the ribbon at the bottom bears the traditional Mongolian script of the country’s name: “ᠠᠷᠠᠳ ᠤᠯᠤᠰ ᠮᠣᠩᠭᠣᠯ ᠨᠠᠶᠢᠷᠠᠮᠳᠠᠬᠤ ᠪᠦᠭᠦᠳᠡ” (Mongolian People’s Republic).
At the centre of the emblem is an image of a Mongolian man in traditional attire riding a horse across the steppe toward a rising sun, symbolising the nation’s march toward a bright communist future.
Flanking the central figure are images of Mongolia’s most important livestock—cattle, goats, sheep, and camels—which, together with the horse in the centre, represent the traditional “five livestock” (таван хошуу мал). These animals hold deep cultural significance in Mongolian nomadic society.
The outer rim of the national emblem bears a circular inscription in Cyrillic Mongolian that reads “Бүгд Найрамдах Монгол Ард Улс” (Mongolian People’s Republic), along with the date “35ОН”, corresponding to the year AD 1945.
The lower edge of the coin’s reverse is decorated with a wreath motif, while the upper edge displays the denomination “5 МӨНГӨ” (5 Möngö) in Cyrillic script.
