This is a 1 S’dor gold coin issued in AD 1758 in Belgium, then under the rule of the Austrian Habsburg dynasty.
The coin is encircled on both the obverse and reverse by a toothed border. The centre of the obverse features a right-facing half-length portrait of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, depicted wearing ornate court dress and a small crown. Below her right shoulder appears the engraver’s initial “R”, the signature of renowned French medallist Jacques-Antoine Roettiers.
Surrounding the portrait is the Latin inscription of the empress’s title: “MAR · TH · D · G · R · IMP · G · HUN · BOH · R ·”, which expands to: “Maria Theresa, by the Grace of God, Empress of the Romans, Queen of Germany, Hungary, and Bohemia.”
Maria Theresa’s father, Charles VI, had no male heir. According to the traditional Habsburg succession laws, only male descendants were permitted to inherit the throne. To ensure his daughter’s right to succession, Charles VI issued the Pragmatic Sanction of 1713, a legal decree that allowed Maria Theresa to become the first and only female sovereign in the history of the Habsburg dynasty.
However, dissatisfaction among the German princes within the Holy Roman Empire, as well as opposition from neighbouring powers such as France, led to the outbreak of the War of the Austrian Succession (AD 1740–1748). The conflict ultimately concluded with Austria ceding certain territories and the international recognition of Maria Theresa’s rule, alongside that of her husband, Francis Stephen, who became Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor.
The reverse of the coin features the coat of arms of the Austrian Netherlands, consisting of a crowned shield adorned with arrow-shaped decorations at each corner. Within the shield, the left side displays the arms of Austria, while the right side bears the diagonal stripes of the Duchy of Burgundy, symbolising the medieval rulers of the Belgian region. Beneath the shield is a mint mark indicating the coin was struck at the Brussels Mint.
Surrounding the coat of arms is a Latin inscription listing several of the Habsburg titles in the Low Countries: “ARCH · AUS · DUX · BURG · BRAB · C · FL ·”, which abbreviates: “Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy and Brabant, Count of Flanders”. The reverse also bears the minting date: 1758.
The Austrian Netherlands can be traced back to AD 1713, when the War of the Spanish Succession came to an end. Under the terms of the Treaty of Utrecht, the newly established Bourbon monarchy of Spain ceded its territories in the Low Countries to the Austrian Habsburgs in exchange for international recognition of Philip V as King of Spain.
In AD 1792, the Austrian Netherlands were occupied by French revolutionary forces, and following the Napoleonic Wars, the region was incorporated into the newly formed Kingdom of the Netherlands. Eventually, in AD 1831, it gained independence and became the modern Kingdom of Belgium.
