This is a miniature silver Jubilee Medal issued on May 6, AD 1935, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the accession of King George V of the United Kingdom.
The obverse of the medal features left-facing portraits of King George V and Queen Mary, both wearing formal ceremonial attire and crowns. Surrounding the portraits is a Latin inscription that reads the royal couple’s names and the date of the Silver Jubilee: “GEORGE • V • AND • QUEEN • MARY • MAY • VI • MCMXXXV” (George V and Queen Mary, May 6, AD 1935).
The reverse of the medal features the royal cypher “GRI,” surmounted by a crown, symbolising King George V’s reign. Flanking the cypher are the dates of his accession to the throne, “MAY-6 1910,” on the left and the Silver Jubilee date, “MAY-6 1935,” on the right. The medal is suspended from a ribbon coloured in white, red, and blue—reflecting the design of the Union Jack.
Since his accession to the throne in AD 1910, King George V faced the greatest challenge of his reign in leading the British Empire through the First World War. Given that the royal family’s original surname, Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, was of German origin—shared with a nation then at war with Britain—George V changed the family name to Windsor as a demonstration of patriotism, thus founding the House of Windsor, which continues to this day. In AD 1935, George V became the first British monarch to celebrate a Silver Jubilee, marking the 25th anniversary of his accession. However, as Britain was still grappling with the effects of the Great Depression, the King personally insisted that the Jubilee celebrations remain modest, preferring that funds be allocated to more pressing national needs.
