This is a miniature version of the silver commemorative medal issued on May 26, AD 1896, by Nicholas II, the last Tsar of the Romanov dynasty of Russia, to celebrate his coronation.
The medal is circular in shape. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Nicholas II, with his imperial title inscribed in Russian on either side: “Б. М. (By the grace of God, Nicholas II, Emperor and Autocrat of All Russia). The reverse bears a crown at the top, and at the bottom, the date of the coronation is inscribed in three lines of Russian text: “КОРОНОВАНЪ ВЪ МОСКВѢ 14 мая 1896” (Crowned in Moscow, May 14, AD 1896).
On May 14, AD 1896, although already reigning as Tsar, Nicholas II held his formal coronation ceremony at the Kremlin. On the same day, a massive crowd gathered at the Khodynka Field for a public celebration where free gifts were to be distributed. Tragically, a stampede occurred due to overcrowding, resulting in numerous injuries and the recovery of 1,282 bodies. Upon learning of the disaster, Nicholas II, following the advice of his uncle, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, who was then Governor-General of Moscow, chose not to visit the site or the wounded immediately, but instead proceeded with the planned coronation festivities. The “Khodynka Tragedy” deeply tarnished Nicholas II’s image among the populace—particularly the lower classes—and came to symbolise the early signs of discontent that foreshadowed the eventual fall of the Romanov dynasty.
