This is an insignia of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques (Order of Academic Palms), established on March 17, AD 1808, by Napoleon I to recognise distinguished scholars of the University of Paris. Initially instituted with three classes, the order was restructured between AD 1889 and 1914 to consist of only two ranks. In AD 1955, the original three-tier system was reinstated, and the order has since been administered by the French Ministry of Education.
The decoration is notably modest in appearance, consisting of a pair of black enamel olive branches outlined in gold. It is suspended from a ribbon of solid purple, which complements the understated yet dignified design.
The conferral of the order is not limited to French citizens. In AD 1998, for instance, renowned Taiwanese linguist and French language specialist Ms. Chiu Ta-Huan was awarded the grade of Officier of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques.
