This is a miniature version of the Order of Saint-Charles, issued by the Monégasque royal family. Established in AD 1858, the order comprises a total of five distinct classes.
The decoration features a bifurcated Maltese cross in alternating red and white enamel, with each arm terminating in a small pearl-like bead. The cross is encircled by a laurel wreath, and at the top it is surmounted by a crown-shaped suspension element.
The obverse medallion features a red field bearing the cypher of the order’s founder, Prince Charles III of Monaco, surrounded by a white enamel band inscribed with the Latin motto “PRINCEPS ET PATRIA” (“Prince and Fatherland”). The reverse medallion displays a red-and-white lozenge pattern, the heraldic emblem of the ruling Grimaldi dynasty of the Principality of Monaco, encircled by a band inscribed with “DEO JUVANTE” (“With God’s Help”).
