This is a miniature version of the National Order of the Legion of Honour from the period of the French Third Republic. What makes this miniature distinctive is that the reverse medallion bears the design of the Brazilian Order of the Rose, indicating that its original recipient was decorated by both France and Brazil during their lifetime.
The decoration features a white five-pointed star with bifurcated arms, encircled by a laurel wreath. At the top, it is suspended from a laurel wreath-shaped suspension. The obverse medallion bears an engraved portrait of Marianne, the personification of republican ideals, while the surrounding blue enamel band is inscribed with “Republique Francaise” (French Republic).
The reverse of the decoration reproduces the design of the Brazilian Order of the Rose. At its centre, the medallion features radiating rays as a background, bearing the date “2-8-1829.” The surrounding blue enamel band is inscribed with the names of the imperial couple who founded the order: “PEDRO E AMELIA” (Pedro and Amélie).
