This is a wind-chime ornament likely dating to the Daoguang period (circa AD 1820–1850), composed of Qing dynasty copper coins combined with some from the Northern Song period. Its probable function was decorative or ritual, possibly serving as an object used in religious ceremonies.
This wind chime is primarily composed of coins from the reigns of three Qing emperors—Daoguang, Jiaqing, and Qianlong—supplemented by some Song coins such as Xuanhe Tongbao and Huang Song Tongbao, all strung together to form the piece.
At the top, the coins are arranged in a diamond-shaped formation, with the outer edge decorated with a band of gold paint. The central section features a smaller circular frame made of bamboo strips, filled with tightly bound coins at its centre. Around this circle hang ten tassells, each consisting of approximately four coins, with cotton balls and red cloth at the ends for decoration.
The lower section of the chime is similarly reinforced with a bamboo ring, from which eight additional tassells hang, each adorned with about nine coins.
