This is a 10-Cash copper coin minted in the oasis city of Kashgar in southern Xinjiang in the 18th year of the Republic (AD 1929). At the time, coin production in Xinjiang combined traditional manual methods with mechanical assistance, resulting in numerous minor variations within the same coin type.
The obverse of the coin features a beaded circle enclosing the Chinese national title “中華民國” (Republic of China), surrounded by a floral motif. Depending on the variety, this motif appears either as radiating rays or as a gear design; this type is the gear version.
Outside the beaded circle, the characters for the cyclical year “己巳” (Ji-Si) appear on both the left and right sides as dividing markers. The upper edge bears the mint location “新疆喀什造” (Minted in Kashgar, Xinjiang), while the lower edge displays the denomination “當紅錢十文” (Valid Red Money, 10 Cash).
The reverse of the coin depicts the flag of the Nanjing Nationalist Government and the flag of the Kuomintang (KMT), both tied to arrow-shaped flagpoles and decorated with a large floral knot. This variety features the national flag on the left and the party flag on the right. On either side of the arrowhead at the top, the Chinese characters “銅幣” (Copper Coin) are inscribed.
