This is a Miniature Swedish Order of the Polar Star (Nordstjärneorden), Knight class, and the form shown is consistent with examples made in the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. The white-enamelled Maltese cross with a blue central medallion bearing the motto NESCIT OCCASUM, the applied royal crown suspension, and the overall proportions correspond to the standard knight’s insignia produced from the late nineteenth century through the period preceding the mid-twentieth-century reforms of the Swedish orders. The order bears no visible maker’s marks or assay stamps.

Both the obverse and reverse of the badge comprise a white enamelled Maltese cross edged in gold, centred with a blue enamel medallion inscribed with the legend NESCIT OCCASUM (“It knows no decline”), surrounding a five-pointed star. Between the arms of the cross are four gold crowns, with the badge surmounted by a Swedish royal crown, suspended from a ribbon.

The Royal Order of the Polar Star was established on 23 February 1748 by King Frederick I of Sweden, alongside the Royal Order of the Sword and the Royal Order of the Seraphim, together forming the highest honours of the Kingdom of Sweden. The Royal Order of the Polar Star comprises five ranks, with the highest rank, the Commander Grand Cross, distinguished by a black sash and a star badge, as well as a collar adorned with the order’s insignia.

The Royal Order of the Polar Star was established to reward individuals who made significant contributions to Sweden in civil fields, including politics, economics, and culture. Following reforms in AD 1975, the award is now exclusively granted to foreign nationals or stateless individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Sweden. It is no longer awarded to Swedish citizens.
