This is a miniature version of the Order of the Dragon of Annam, established in Vietnam under French control.

The decoration takes the form of a Gold eight-pointed star composed of faceted, diamond-like radiating rays extending from a central blue enamel medallion. This medallion bears the gilded Annamese inscription “同慶皇帝 (Emperor Đồng Khánh),” rendered in inverted orientation, together with four golden solar emblems. Surrounding these elements is a red enamel circlet edged in gold. The upper portion is surmounted by an imperial crown, above which a suspension ring is formed by a green enamelled dragon.

The Order of the Dragon of Annam can be categorized into four types:

French colonial orders, recognized by the French government, were established by the indigenous rulers of France’s various colonies and protectorates to commend services rendered within or for these territories. Eligibility for admission to one of these orders in times of peace necessitated ten years of service in a colony, with time spent in Tunis or Algeria counting as half and service in other colonies being tripled in computation.

The historical context of the Order of the Dragon of Annam is rooted in the French conquest of Vietnam (AD 1858–AD 1885), a protracted conflict between the Second French Empire, subsequently the French Third Republic, and the Vietnamese empire of Đại Nam. In AD 1885, the French emerged victorious, annexing Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia into French Indochina in AD 1887.

The Tonkin expedition (AD 1883-AD 1885) enabled France to establish a protectorate over Annam, situated between Tonkin and Cochinchina, on June 6, AD 1884. In recognition of this alliance, Emperor Dong Khanh instituted the Imperial Order of the Dragon of Annam on March 14, AD 1886, with the intention of honoring the civil and military contributions of Annamites and foreigners. It was renamed as the Order of the Dragon of Annam in AD 1896.

Pursuant to the decree of 10 May AD 1896, it was incorporated into the category of colonial orders and renamed the Order of the Dragon of Annam, and could thereafter be conferred at discretion either by the Emperor of Annam or by the French government. From 14 July AD 1933, new regulations stipulated that nominees had to be at least twenty-nine years of age and to have completed a minimum of nine years of civil or military service or professional practice; periods of overseas service were counted as double or triple their actual duration, depending on their nature. Following France’s recognition of Vietnamese independence in AD 1949, the Order of the Dragon of Annam, together with other colonial decorations, was abolished by the communists on 5 May AD 1950, although it continued to be awarded in South Vietnam until AD 1955. On 30 October AD 2002, the Order of the Dragon of Annam was re-established by Prince Nguyễn Phúc Bảo Chính of the Nguyễn dynasty in accordance with the chapters and articles of its statutes, and the relevant religious ceremonies were also conducted at the request of the imperial household.
