This is a small silver-plated pendant in the form of a collapsible miniature telescope. The body is made up of several telescopic cylindrical sections which extend and retract, allowing it to close into a compact cylinder and draw out into a narrow viewing tube when extended.
The front housing is octagonal with a circular centre panel bearing a raised relief of a horse’s head in profile. The hinged lid opens upwards to reveal the viewing lens beneath. A suspension loop at the top of the pendant allows it to be worn on a chain or attached to a fob.
The surface displays light wear and patina consistent with age. As no maker’s or identifying marks are visible, it is not possible to determine the manufacturer of this pendant.
Whether it was intended for a devoted admirer of horses, for use at the racecourse, or simply as an ornament of refined taste remains unknown.
Overall, this piece deftly integrates equestrian decorative elements with a fully functional miniature telescope, housed within a compact, wearable design. Both practical and imaginative, it exemplifies refined metal craftsmanship and inventive artistry.
