This is a small antique early 20th-century French yo-yo toy, made in 9 carat yellow gold, c.1920.
The yo-yo is of circular form with a integral suspension ring. Both faces are decorated with an engine-turned swirl (guilloché) pattern radiating from the centre. A maker’s mark is stamped to the front edge. The object is accompanied by a red leather pouch.
The yo-yo is an ancient toy consisting of two discs joined by an axle and operated by a string, allowing it to spin and return to the hand. Early examples are known from ancient Greece in the 5th century BC. The modern term “yo-yo” derives from the Tagalog language of the Philippines. The toy became widely popular in Europe and the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with commercial production expanding significantly during the 1920s. Precious metal examples such as this were produced in limited numbers as novelty or luxury items during this period.
