This specimen is an iron Kaiyuan Tongbao (開元通寶) minted during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms (五代十國) period of Chinese history.
The physical form of the coin follows the traditional design of the Sinospheric cultural zone, featuring a circular exterior with a central square hole. The obverse inscription consists of the four characters Kaiyuan Tongbao (開元通寶) in clerical script, read in a top-to-bottom and right-to-left sequence. The reverse of the coin is plain and devoid of any inscriptions or markings.
