This is a reign title coin minted during the reign of Emperor Lizong of the Southern Song Dynasty.
According to historical records, the Huangsong Yuanbao coin was first minted in AD 1253 and remained in use until AD 1258.
The obverse side of the coin is circular with a square central hole, featuring both an inner and outer rim. The inscriptions read Huangsong Yuanbao in a regular script style with square, structured strokes. The reverse of the coin features the character Si (四, four) positioned superior to the central perforation, functioning as a formal chronological inscription to denote the year.
During Emperor Lizong’s reign, Neo-Confucianism, particularly the philosophy of Zhu Xi, was actively promoted. Zhu Xi, along with other Neo-Confucian masters such as Zhou Dunyi, Cheng Hao, Cheng Yi, and Zhang Zai, were honoured in the Confucian temple. Starting with Emperor Lizong, Neo-Confucianism became the official state ideology and the orthodox philosophy of the realm.
