This is a commemorative stickpin themed around the San Marco, a vessel of the Italian Royal Navy (Regia Marina).
The obverse centre features a silver, high-relief bust of the winged lion. This winged lion serves as the symbol of Saint Mark, the patron saint of Venice, with its forepaws grasping an open Bible upon which faint Latin inscriptions are discernible. The execution of the winged lion motif demonstrates superb craftsmanship, characterized by distinct and finely rendered lines in the mane and plumage. Encircling the lion is a rich, royal blue, low-temperature enamel band inscribed with a silver Latin motto: “CUSTOS VEL ULTOR”, which translates as “The Guardian or the Avenger”. This phrase constitutes the official motto of the Italian Royal Navy armoured cruiser San Marco (Incrociatore corazzato San Marco).
The reverse comprises a circular silver baseplate, with its outer rim clearly inscribed in blue enamel infill reading “R. N. S. MARCO”. Within this inscription, “R. N.” stands for Regia Nave (Italian for “Royal Navy Ship”), whilst “S. MARCO” denotes the San Marco itself.
Structurally, this specimen conforms to the classic stickpin typology, featuring a long metal stem soldered at a right angle to the reverse of the primary insignia, rendering it suitable for attachment to a lapel or a necktie. The medial section of the stem incorporates a meticulous twisted design; this knurled or twisted stem was a common characteristic of high-grade early stickpins, engineered to increase friction and thereby prevent the pin from slipping and becoming detached from garments during wear.
The San Marco (RN San Marco) was the second vessel of the San Giorgio-class armoured cruisers, launched in AD 1908 and officially commissioned in AD 1911. Its paramount historical significance lies in the fact that it was the first major warship in the world to be propelled entirely by steam turbines, representing a landmark milestone in naval engineering history. The vessel participated in the Italo-Turkish War (operational in Libya) as well as the First World War. During the First World War, the San Marco was primarily deployed in the Adriatic Sea to counter the Austro-Hungarian Navy, and it participated in naval operations off Brindisi and the Albanian coast.
(The Guardian or the Avenger),這是義大利皇家海軍「聖馬可號」裝甲巡洋艦(Incrociatore corazzato San Marco)的官方艦訓(Motto)。
N. S. MARCO」。其中「R. N.」代表 Regia Nave(義大利文的「皇家軍艦」),而「S. MARCO」即指 San Marco(聖馬可號)。
