This specimen represents a Knight-grade insignia of the Order of the Immaculate Conception of Vila Viçosa.

The central medallion features an intertwined calligraphic monogram “AM” finely engraved upon a gold ground, representing the Latin Ave Maria (Hail Mary) and denoting the order’s deep veneration of the Virgin Mary. Encircling this central motif is a band of blue enamel inscribed with the Portuguese phrase in gilt lettering: “PADROEIRA DO REINO” (Patroness of the Kingdom), surmounted by a small cross. This design directly references the historical event of AD 1646, when King João IV of Portugal proclaimed Our Lady of Vila Viçosa as the patron sovereign (Queen Padroeira) of the realm.

The primary star configuration consists of a nine-pointed gilt starburst. Superimposed upon these golden rays is a prominent large star rendered in white enamel, with each of its intervening angles ornamented by a smaller white enamel star. The badge is suspended from an intricately crafted royal crown of gilt composition, resembling delicate ivory carving; the base of the crown is inset with red and green enamelled dots symbolising gemstones, whilst the finial terminates in a small golden cross attached to the ribbon ring. The decoration is paired with its traditional ribbon of alternating light blue and white stripes—the definitive colours of the Order of Vila Viçosa—which is fitted with a metal suspension bar at the top.

The Order of the Immaculate Conception of Vila Viçosa was instituted on 6 February AD 1818 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil—where the Portuguese court had relocated to evade the Napoleonic Wars—by King João VI of Portugal to commemorate his accession to the throne. The honour was predominantly conferred upon domestic and foreign nobility who had rendered meritorious military, civil, or diplomatic services to the Portuguese Crown. Following the overthrow of the Portuguese monarchy and the subsequent establishment of the Republic in AD 1910, the order was officially abolished as a state decoration; however, it endures to this day as a dynastic order of knighthood appertaining to the House of Braganza, continuing to be bestowed by the claimant to the royal throne.
