This is an Order of the Million Elephants and the White Parasol miniature, the highest honour of the former Kingdom of Laos.

The badge itself is executed in gilt metal and enamel; its central motif features three white-enamelled elephants, symbolizing the historical Laotian kingdom of Lan Xang, which translates literally as the ‘Kingdom of a Million Elephants’. Surmounting the elephants is a multi-tiered, seven-layered white royal parasol, serving as a manifestation of supreme sovereign authority. Suspended immediately beneath the parasol is a horizontal alignment of four rectangular gilt shields, whilst the uppermost section of the badge is adorned with a red-enamelled ribbon motif. The base of the three elephants is further decorated with an arrangement of peacock tail feathers delineated in green and gold enamel.

The suspension ribbon is fashioned from traditional scarlet silk, flanked by intricate geometric borders woven in gold thread. Affixed to the centre of the ribbon is a circular rosette crafted from matching silk, denoting the grade of Officer, or the Fourth Class of the Order.

The order was originally instituted on 1 May AD 1909 by King Sisavang Vong of Luang Prabang to recognize exceptional civil and military merit achieved by both domestic citizens and foreign nationals. During the period of French Indochina, numerous high-ranking French officials and military officers were invested with this honour. Following the abolition of the Laotian monarchy and the subsequent establishment of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in December AD 1975, the conferral of this royal order was formally discontinued.
