This miniature medal group comprises six miniature medals intended for wear with formal civilian attire, such as a tailcoat, rather than military uniform. From left to right, the decorations are the Cuban Pacification Medal (Navy version), the Mexican Service Medal (Navy version), the World War I Victory Medal, the China Relief Expedition Medal (Navy version), the Philippine Campaign Medal (Navy version), and the Good Conduct Medal (Navy version).

Cuban Pacification Medal (Navy version)

This is a miniature Cuban Pacification Medal (Navy version), authorised on 13 August AD 1909 for officers and enlisted men of the Navy and Marine Corps who served ashore in Cuba or upon designated vessels between 12 September AD 1096 and 1 April AD 1909. The obverse, designed by Bailey, Banks and Biddle, depicts the figure of Columbia with a sheathed sword suspended from her belt; in her left hand she holds a flag, and in her right hand an olive branch, which she extends to a Cuban kneeling before her. A tropical landscape forms the background, with a dove of peace hovering above the figures. The inscription ‘Cuban Pacification 1908’ is engraved in a circular arc at the top of the medal, while the reverse design corresponds to the respective service medal of each individual branch of the armed forces.

Mexican Service Medal (Navy version)

This is a miniature Mexican Service Medal (Navy version), authorised on 11 February AD 1918 to honour Navy and Marine Corps personnel who served in the Vera Cruz expedition, aboard designated vessels, or in engagements against Mexican forces between AD 1911 and 1917. Designed by Bailey, Banks and Biddle, the obverse depicts the old castle of San Juan de Ulua in Veracruz harbour, inscribed with ‘Mexico’ and ‘1911–1917’ flanked by cactus branches. The reverse design corresponds to the respective service medal of each individual branch of the armed forces.

World War I Victory Medal

This is a miniature World War I Victory Medal, authorised in AD 1919 to honour US Armed Forces personnel serving on active duty between AD 1917 and 1918, including service in Russia and Siberia. Designed by James Earle Fraser, the obverse features a winged Goddess of Victory, while the reverse displays a national shield with ‘U.S.’ surmounted by a fasces, inscribed ‘The Great War for Civilization’ alongside the names of Allied nations. The medal features a double rainbow ribbon and could be adorned with thin metallic clasps to denote specific battles (starred) or service branches (starless, with the Navy utilising a distinctive rope-patterned border). Following the United States’ declaration of war in AD 1917, the American Expeditionary Forces assisted in turning the tide across Europe, culminating in the historic Meuse-Argonne offensive where over one million troops breached the Hindenburg Line to secure definitive victory on 11 November AD 1918.

China Relief Expedition Medal (Navy version)

This is a miniature China Relief Expedition Medal (navy version), manufactured by Bailey, Banks & Biddle. Authorised in AD 1908, it honours navy personnel who participated in the Boxer Rebellion between AD 1900 and 1901. The obverse depicts the Chien Men (the main gate of Peking) with an Imperial Chinese dragon below, encircled by the inscription ‘CHINA RELIEF EXPEDITION’; due to a damaged die, the year at the base was erroneously engraved as ‘1900’ but remained uncorrected. The reverse features the US Navy emblem (an American eagle with an anchor) and the words ‘FOR SERVICE’. The ribbon was initially yellow with narrow black stripes, later changed in AD 1913 to yellow with blue edges. In AD 1900, to rescue foreign legations and 56 besieged American Marines in Peking, a relief force including 112 Marines launched an expedition; the US 14th Infantry Regiment successfully scaled the Tungpien Gate on 14 August to secure the Legation Quarter. Following the Boxer Protocol, a US detachment remained stationed in Peking until AD 1938.

Philippine Campaign Medal (Navy version)

This is a miniature Philippine Campaign Medal (Navy version) struck in bronze, authorised in AD 1908 to honour Navy personnel who served in the Philippine–American War between AD 1899 and 1903. The obverse depicts the stone gate of Manila, encircled by the inscription ‘PHILIPPINE CAMPAIGN’ and the dates ‘1899–1903’ flanked by palm branches, while the reverse features the US Navy emblem (an American eagle with an anchor) and the words ‘FOR SERVICE’. Its ribbon comprises three equal stripes of red, yellow, and red. The conflict originated after the Spanish–American War of 1898 when the US acquired sovereignty over the islands, escalating into full-scale war in February 1899. Although organized resistance subsided with President Aguinaldo’s surrender in 1901, sporadic fighting persisted until 1913, and the Philippines eventually achieved full independence in AD 1946.

Good Conduct Medal (Navy version)

This is a miniature Navy Good Conduct Medal, originally instituted as a badge in AD 1884 and officially designated as a medal in AD 1896 to honour enlisted personnel completing three years of continuous active service with exemplary, unblemished conduct. Adopted at the suggestion of Spanish–American War veteran Commodore Winfield Scott Schley, the obverse features a full-rigged ship inscribed ‘Constitution’ set upon an anchor, encircled by an anchor chain and the words ‘United States Navy’. The reverse features the raised inscription ‘Fidelity Zeal Obedience’ around a blank central field for recipient engraving. Suspended from a dark magenta ribbon (originally brilliant red), subsequent conferrals of this decoration were historically indicated by rope-bordered engagement clasps, which have since been superseded by the authorisation of small star insignia.
