This is a set of miniature medals, predominantly originating from the United Kingdom and awarded in the early twentieth century. Miniature medals were designed to be worn with civilian formal attire, such as tailcoats, and were typically bespoke orders commissioned individually. From left to right, the set comprises the Distinguished Service Medal, the silver Eight-Nation AllianceSilver China War Medal, the 1914–15 Star, the British War Medal, and the Allied Victory Medal from the First World War (AD 1914–AD 1918).

Distinguished Service Medal (Miniature)

This is a miniature version of the Distinguished Service Medal awarded during the reign of King George V to petty officers and ratings of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in recognition of acts of bravery in the face of the enemy. Recipients of this award are entitled to post-nominal letters ‘DSM’.

Eight-Nation AllianceSilver China War Medal (Miniature, With Reliefof Pekin & Taku Forts Clasps)

This is a miniature silver “Eight-Nation Alliance China War Medal,” awarded by the British government in AD 1902 to individuals involved in the AD 1900 Boxer Rebellion, with the clasp bearing “Relief of Pekin & Taku Forts” Depending on their role, combatants received a silver medal, while other participants received a bronze medal.

First World War 1914-15 Star (Miniature)

This is a miniature version of the 1914–15 Star, an decoration originally instituted in AD 1918 during the reign of King George V and awarded to all combat personnel who had served in a theatre of war prior to AD 1915 and were not otherwise eligible for the 1914 Star.

War Medal (Miniature version 3)

This is a miniature version of one of the most widely issued British decorations following the First World War, namely the “War Medal, WWI”, also known as the “British War Medal 1914–1920”. The medal was awarded to personnel of the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, Mercantile Marine, and recognised auxiliary and medical organisations from Great Britain, as well as its Imperial Dominions, Colonies, and India. Qualifying conditions varied according to the branch of service and nature of duty.

Victory Medal of the First World War (Miniature version 3)

This is a miniature version of the Victory Medal (British Empire pattern), one of the most widely issued campaign medals distributed by the United Kingdom following the conclusion of the First World War. The medal was awarded to all personnel who had qualified for the 1914 Star or the 1914–15 Star, and to the vast majority of recipients of the British War Medal 1914–1920, meaning it was virtually never awarded in isolation.

If it is assumed that this miniature set was awarded to a single individual, and that he did not receive a higher-level decoration from the Distinguished Service series—thereby remaining unpromoted to commissioned officer rank—the owner who most closely corresponds to this group is Henry William Brady. He was born in Kincardine, Scotland, on 3 July AD 1878, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard HMS Northampton on 29 May AD 1896. During the Second Boer War, Brady served ashore with the naval brigade from HMS Terrible in Natal, subsequently transferring to the China Station where he boarded HMS Fame (borne on the books of HMS Barfleur), a destroyer then under the maiden command of a young lieutenant named Roger Keyes. Brady played a pivotal role, leading from the front in boarding actions, during the raid that captured four modern Hai Long-class torpedo-boat destroyers berth in the dockyard at the Taku Forts. Brady was one of only three recipients aboard HMS Fame to be awarded the China War Medal with two clasps, the others being Keyes himself and the First Lieutenant, Tompkinson. The latter eventually rose to the rank of Admiral, only to become a central figure in the Invergordon Mutiny some thirty years later, an event that ruined his naval career. Remarkably, all three men were found to still be serving together during the Zeebrugge Raid in AD 1918. Throughout this period, Brady continuously accompanied Keyes across his successive naval appointments. In AD 1908, having apparently been overlooked for the second clasp to his China War Medal, the supplementary clasp was dispatched to him in November of that year while serving aboard HMS Venus, Keyes’s new command following a three-year tenure as Naval Attaché in Rome. Between AD 1910 and AD 1915, while Keyes served as Inspecting Captain of Submarines, Brady saw service aboard HMS Arrogant and HMS Dolphin. He participated in the Battle of the Dogger Bank aboard HMS Lurcher. When Keyes was appointed Chief of Staff to Admiral de Robeck at Gallipoli, Brady accompanied him aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Inflexible. As ever, Brady remained at Keyes’s side when the latter landed at Anzac Cove with General Birdwood to inspect the front-line trenches, and he subsequently took part in the Second Ostend Raid. Following the war, Brady was demobilised on 1 December AD 1919; it is believed that he remained in Keyes’s employment in civilian life.

(Battle of the Dogger Bank)。
