This decoration represents a jewelled miniature version of the Portuguese Military Order of Saint James of the Sword (Ordem Militar de Sant’Iago da Espada).

The obverse is surmounted by a laurel wreath set with green gemstones, topped with a suspension ring of gold. The main body below depicts the Order’s sword-cross, a variant of the cross fleury, whose arms and blade are set with red gemstones, in contrast to the red enamel utilised on the standard insignia. The cross is flanked and supported at the base by two palm branches set with white gemstones, replacing the white scroll that conventionally bears the motto Ciência, Letras e Artes (‘Science, Letters and Arts’).

The knighthood of the Military Order of Saint James traces its origins to the Order of Santiago, established in AD 1170 in the region of Castile, Spain. Its primary foundational mission was to protect pilgrims travelling to Santiago de Compostela in north-western Spain from attacks by infidels and bandits. According to Catholic tradition, the relics of Saint James the Elder (Saint Iago) were discovered in AD 829 in a field guided by a star—campus stellae, meaning ‘field of the star’—which subsequently became one of the three major Catholic pilgrimage sites in Europe. The emblem of the Order comprised a red cross fleury with a lower arm fashioned as a sword blade, symbolising the ideal of defending the faith with sword in hand.

Following the distinguished military exploits of the Order during the Reconquista, Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, introduced the Order to his realm in AD 1172, granting it vast estates and fortresses, such as Almada and Palmela, to serve as military strongholds against Muslim forces in the south. However, to prevent the Portuguese knighthood from remaining subordinate to the authority of the Spanish Grand Master, King Denis I of Portugal initiated the independence of the Portuguese branch around AD 1289. This separation was formally confirmed by a papal bull issued by Pope John XXII in AD 1320, officially establishing the independent Portuguese Military Order of Saint James, headquartered at Palmela.

During the Age of Discoveries in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the Order of Saint James played a pivotal role in overseas expansion. Numerous illustrious navigators and explorers who spearheaded the expansion of the Portuguese Empire—including Vasco da Gama, who opened the sea route to India, and Afonso de Albuquerque, Governor of India—were elite knights of this Order. As the Order accumulated immense wealth, lands, prebends, and privileges, King John III of Portugal obtained a papal bull in AD 1551 that permanently annexed the Grand Masterships of the Order of Saint James, the Order of Christ, and the Order of Aviz to the Portuguese Crown, to be held perpetually by successive Portuguese monarchs.

In AD 1789, Queen Mary I of Portugal instituted a comprehensive institutional reform of the kingdom’s three military orders, secularising the Order of Saint James and transforming it from a religious military fraternity into a secular order of merit. In AD 1862, King Luís I effected a major restructuring of the decoration, designating it specifically as an order of merit to honour exceptional achievements in science, literature, and the arts, while formally establishing its motto Ciência, Letras e Artes. Following the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of the republic in AD 1910, the Order was briefly suppressed, before being officially restored in AD 1918.

(Military Order of Saint James of the Sword / Ordem Militar de Sant’Iago da Espada)的迷你版,加鑲珠寶。
