Antique bracelet charms are small decorative pendants, usually crafted in silver or gold, designed to be suspended from a chain bracelet and worn at the wrist. They were produced in a wide variety of forms, including symbols, animals, everyday objects, sentimental motifs and miniature functional models. Many examples are articulated, incorporating moving parts such as opening lockets, mechanical devices, telescopic elements or hinged compartments. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—particularly in the Victorian era and early Edwardian era—charm bracelets became popular among young women, who collected and displayed charms as personal tokens, souvenirs or markers of courtship. It is often recounted that if a gentleman wished to examine a lady’s charm closely, he was expected to present her with another charm in exchange, thereby contributing to her collection. Charms were commonly attached by jump rings or swivel clasps, allowing additions over time, and the bracelet functioned both as jewellery and as a visible record of personal taste, travel, relationships and milestones.
